Position description
The Academic Coordinator (who will have a working title of Executive Director of the Korea Law Center) will manage the day-to-day operations of the Korea Law Center and will be responsible for leading a research hub dedicated to legal scholarship and professional exchange between South Korea and the United States.
The mission of the Korea Law Center is to study and promote solutions to issues arising at the intersection of U.S. and Korean Law. The Korea Law Center was established in 2009 to serve as a platform for exchange, collaboration, and the sharing of knowledge between students, legal scholars, judges, lawyers, and policymakers from South Korea and the United States. The Executive Director will be responsible for building on the achievements of the Center since 2009, nurturing existing relationships and partnerships, building new ones, and developing and planning the academic programming of the Korea Law Center.
Reporting to the Dean of the law school, the responsibilities of the Executive Director will include, but are not limited to:
The executive director will also develop partnerships with top Korean law firms, the business community and top-tier conglomerates; help establish new programs, including potentially a law and diplomacy initiative; build and work with a board of prominent advisors; and engage in other outreach to the Orange County and Korean communities. The Executive Director will be responsible for ensuring financial stability of the Center through formalizing partnerships with business and legal communities, continuing to build the visiting scholars program, and supporting students from Korea earning LL.M. degrees at the law school.
Requirements
Candidates for the position must have a law degree (J.D. or LL.M.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
Successful candidates will have: (1) proven leadership, managerial, and fundraising skills; (2) deep knowledge of Korean law, legal systems, and/or international legal collaborations; (3) and strong communication skills (proficiency in English and Korean is required).
Prior experience with developing partnerships between the U.S. and Korea is highly desirable.
Nature of Appointment
The Executive Director of the Korea Law Center will report to the Dean of the Law School, as well as potentially other senior leaders in the law school. The position is a full-time, twelve-month academic appointment with the standard vacation and benefits package accorded to employees of the University of California. This is not a faculty appointment, and residence during the summer is expected. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
